A TREE UPROOTED BY JEALOSY By Jacob Hey
“That he or she may come to me, Hathor guide the way.”
I said as I tied the first knot
“That he or she may see and like me as I am, Hathor guide the way.”
I said as I tied the second.
“That he or she may be kind and gentle in word and action, Hathor guide the way.”
I said, tying the third.
“May he or she grow to love me more each day, Hathor guide the way.”
Tying the fourth tightly.
“May he or she be faithful and never give me cause to doubt, Hathor guide the way.”
as I tied the fifth.
“May our love grow deeper with the years, Hathor guide the way.”
the sixth tied tight.
May there always be unity through bad times as well as good, so long as the water flows and the sun shines, Hathor guide the way.”
The seventh know was tied.
I left the incense to burn and untied the knots
One by one, day after day
In accordance with ancient tradition
Reciting the chants for each knot
one by one, day after day.
On the seventh day I buried them beneath
the Magnolia tree in our front yard.
as I recall, the tree was in full blossom
brimming with light and life
I prayed to the lord and lady to free me from my desolate isle
and then I saw her
distant at first,
but our paths drew nearer
when I looked upon her my breath would cease
and I would look away again
we began to exchange thoughts
and a kiss that I wished would last a lifetime
as we parted ways I feared our paths would never again cross
but I wrote to her just the same
trying to express to her
what sort of being that I am
We met at a theater
and began to see each other often
She seemed to encapsulate all of the qualities I had ever looked for
in another human being
I would take her to all my old haunts
and in return she would grace me with her lovely presence
It was a lovely tree that we began to tend
It was all i ever wanted
but the old, sickly tree lingered
that tree that I tried so hard to kill was revived
and when she saw the tree that we began to tend
the stench of anger and jealousy
filled the air
the air of the sickly tree that in years passed
I had tried so hard to tend to
the tree that wanted my soul
the tree that tried to devour me
the tree that refused to let go.
I tried my best to ignore it
and go on about my days
our newfound love was rapturous and ecstatic
While remaining gentle and cool
like a pond with all the spirit of the ocean
Looking upon her is like staring at the sun
so bright and so fair
I have to look away
for fear of going blind
from her fair effervescent flame
I tried my best to bring her beauty and joy
and things to keep her light aflame
but as I tended to our newborn tree
the old tree fed upon it
and began to kindle her flame anew
but this trees flame was not one of rapture and of joy,
but of lust, hate and pain
I tried to put it out,
but all in vein.
and as I did, the tree withered and half dead
ensnared my soul
and drew me in
and spat me back
taunting me
with her cruel laugh
leaving me, bleeding
on the shore against the stone
craving love
and all alone
yet still I retain my compassion
for that withered and ugly tree
lost in darkness and craving to be free
but I will no longer tend to her
for she has taken away from me
the fair lady who returned me my sanity
I must press on
from this dark, lost space
in the hopes that this emptiness in my heart
will be replaced
the emptiness left from that uprooted tree
so young
tended to only for less than a year
so fair
the presence of the lord and lady was always near
I will always thank you Hathor,
for granting me that wish
If not for Seteck I am sure
that our tree would have blossomed beautifully
bearing amazing fruit
but even though uprooted by the old tree’s jealousy
I will always remember our infant tree
and all the blessings she left for me.
